Facebook users have been struggling to log in to to the popular site due to an unknown glitch.
Members of the social networking site, which is used by more than 80 million people worldwide, have been greeted by an error message when they tried to sign in.
Facebook has admitted it is aware of the problem and apologised for the inconvenience.
Bloggers spread the news of the outage by writing posts about it.
The problem comes as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg continues to fight a San Jose court claim he stole someone else's idea when he set up the web phenomenon.
Some of his classmates at Harvard created a site called ConnectU, which they argue formed the basis of Facebook, a charge Mr Zuckerberg disputes.
The case hit the headlines again this week as the judge closed the case to the public. A ruling is expected before the autumn.
Facebook later said the site was now "fully restored" but gave no indication as to what the problem had been.
Fabio Torlini from web hosting company Rackspace said he was surprised a high profile site such as Facebook suffered from an outage.
"You wouldn't expect any downtime from someone who makes their living from a website, during one of their prime times," he told.
